Class Notes
From the Instructor: How are Black youth racialized and gendered? In what ways do Black youth express their analyses of the world around them? What particular issues arise for Black youth at school? Why does the study of Black youth matter? This course will address these questions and more by turning to interdisciplinary scholarship and Black youth cultural productions. We will begin by investigating the meaning of childhood and the means through which young people are racialized. Then, we will discuss the ways that Black youth learn the meaning of race through their interactions with others (especially families) and their geographical surroundings. Next, we will discuss what it means to be a Black student and how educators have responded to contemporary concerns about the school-to-prison pipeline. Finally, we will discuss how researchers can reparatively engage Black youth and develop a recognition and appreciation for Black youth?s cultural productions. Students will complete a humanistic or social science research project in which they engage at least one of the course themes. By the end of this course, students will have a critical understanding of what youth/childhood is and how it is uniquely experienced by Black people.
