Class Notes

Topic: ?Filipinas: Gendering and Ungendering the Filipinx Diaspora: From the demure Maria Clara to the infamous ?Iron Butterfly? Imelda Marcos, the heroized Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) and 90-Day Fiance, the figure of the Filipina is continually revised and contested, deployed on the global stage for a variety of political and expressive purposes. Drawing from Denise Cruz?s notion of the transpacific feminine, as well as Gina Velasco?s project of queering the global Filipina, this course traces popular cultural, literary, and audiovisual renderings of the Filipina in the context of empire and diaspora. Students will work with theoretical texts in critical race and ethnic studies, visual studies, gender and queer studies, history, and literature, and with a diverse range of media, all of which engage with and/or deconstruct the project of gendering the Philippines? global diaspora.
