Description

Introduction to the landscape of playmaking, theatrical production, and interdisciplinary performance art by women in the African Diaspora/Black Women in the United States and beyond. Course includes close reading, analysis and discussion of play scripts, poetry, related theoretical and historical readings, film and theatrical/performance art presentations. Also includes exploration of individual student artistic practice. Themes explored include: Black women and feminism, ritual as performance, meditations on the lived experience(s), identities and cultural values of Black women in the diaspora. Enrollment is by permission of the instructor. Class Notes

ENROLLMENT: Requires having passed a CRES, FMST, African American Literature, Rainbow Theater or similar class - please email the instructor with information about your relevant previous coursework to apply for admission into the class: Prof. Rollins, lirollin@ucsc.edu. This course requires your attendance at 2 Thursday or Friday evening plays / theatrical performances in San Jose or OAK/SF (transportation arrangements made and paid for by the department).
