OpenDescription
Overview and basic training in statistical programs used in the economics major. Introduces students to basic data analysis workflow. A workflow of data analysis is a process for managing all aspects of data analysis. Planning, documenting, and organizing work; cleaning the data; creating, renaming, and verifying variables; creating summary statistics; and archiving what has been done are all integral parts of students' data analysis. This is an online asynchronous lab, with synchronous office hours/question and answer sessions.
Enrollment Requirements
Prerequisites: Mathematics placement (MP) score of 300 or higher, or completion of AM 3 or AM 11A or ECON 11A or MATH 3 or MATH 11A or MATH 16A or MATH 19A or MATH 20A. Concurrent enrollment in STAT 17 is required. Declared and proposed majors in one of the economics programs who are transferring in a course equivalent to STAT 17, should contact the Economics Department to petition for an exception to the concurrent enrollment requirement.
Class Notes
Wait list the lab section first. You cannot enroll in the STAT 17 lecture until you have successfully been enrolled in the co-requisite lab section. Enroll in the lecture portion of the course after you are enrolled in the lab.
All students - If you completed the prerequisites but get an error message, email your proof of prerequisite material to the instructor for approval to enroll - Saha Subhra - susaha@ucsc.edu. Professor Subhra will be abroad from June 22 to July 25. Please submit your request before this time. Otherwise, it will be reviewed after.
If you need to take the prerequisite in Session 1, enroll in that course first, then email summer@ucsc.edu for a permission number to enroll in this course.
From the Instructor: Students need to go to stata.com and rent the software STATA BE for 6 months ($48 - this is the cheapest option, paid by the student, not included in tution). Please note that STATA is NOT compatible with chromebook. Make sure that you download STATA before the classes start. Please download STATA in your local C Drive - not in One Drive, not in Cloud etc. You can find STATA on UCSC computers at McHenry and Science & Engineering Libraries Windows Software (ucsc.edu)
