From the Instructor: Special Focus: Crime and Punishment Onscreen Since the invention of cinema, fictional images of crime, policing, and incarceration have captivated the screens and public imagination.
This course traces the histories of [anti-]carceral genres, including the development of the carceral-entertainment complex, and the ways the audiences have engaged with and negotiated these imaginaries. Taking a thematic approach, we will cover a wide range of genres, including prison film, police procedural, science fiction, and abolitionist visions.
The course fulfills the VAST Certificate Program requirements.
