Class Notes
This five-week course explores A Midsummer Night's Dream and Pericles, the plays that will be in production at Santa Cruz Shakespeare's summer festival. Topics for discussion include: the tension between desire and social obligation; the transition from adolescence to adulthood and its destabilizing effects on family bonds; the nature and purpose of the theater as an institution; and the impact that theatrical productions make on our understanding of Shakespeare's texts. No experience with Shakespeare is necessary. All are welcome. Students will attend Santa Cruz Shakespeare productions (tickets provided).
