Description

Practical methods for organizing and analyzing economic data, testing economic hypotheses, and measuring economic relationships. Regression analysis is the main empirical method, and basic statistical and probability theory is included. Students gain hands-on computer experience with an econometric software package.

Enrollment Requirements

Prerequisite(s): ECON 1 and ECON 2; STAT 17 and STAT 17L; and one of the following: AM 11B or ECON 11B, or MATH 22, or MATH 23A, or AM 30. ECON 100A or ECON 100B strongly recommended as preparation.

Class Notes

Summer 2024 will be the last term in which previous statistics prerequisites may potentially be used to qualify for ECON 113. Permission Code Eligibility:
UCSC Students - (1) If you declared your economics major before fall 2022 and have completed and passed the former ECON 113 statistics prerequisite and all other 113 prerequisites, then you may contact ecugradv@ucsc.edu to request a permission code for ECON 113-02. (2) If you declared your TIM or ENVS-ECON major before fall 2023, and have completed and passed the former ECON 113 statistics prerequisite and all other 113 prerequisites, then you may contact ecugradv@ucsc.edu to request a permission code for ECON 113-02. If your sample plan advises you to take STAT 17/17L, then you are not eligible for a permission code to bypass that prerequisite for this course.
Visiting Students - email your proof of prerequisite material to the instructor for approval to enroll, Hyunjin Yun, hyun8@ucsc.edu, with the subject: Summer Econ 113.
If you need to take the prerequisite in Session 1, enroll in that course first, then email summer@ucsc.edu for a permission number to enroll in this course.
From the Department: This is a challenging course for students during the regular-paced term and especially over the accelerated 5-week term. Students are advised not to have other competing priorities during the session. Students are required to install Stata, a statistical program for data analysis.
