Description
An intensive analysis of the First World War from multiple perspectives: military, diplomatic, political, economic, technological, global, and cultural. The emphasis is on the transformative impact of the war on European societies, international relations, and modern culture.
Class Notes
From the instructor: In this course, we explore the First World War's origins, the ways that colonies and colonized people across the world were drawn into the war, how societies were permanently changed, the wartime labor contributed by millions of people, and how the world attempted to regain normalcy after the war's end. You will learn valuable research skills as you investigate the wartime perspectives that interest you the most, culminating in a creative final project, and will engage with photography, propaganda, recipe, and diary sources in other assignments.
