Class Notes
From the instructor: Topic - Street Poetry in the US: Towards an Intersectional Performance Poetics.
This course engages with literary, audio, and visual works of a range of US performance poets, rappers, visual artists, and activists from the mid to late 20 th century and early 21 st century.
As a class, we will rethink the histories and possible futures of performance poetry in light of the commercial success of slam, spoken word, and rap over the past few decades. More concretely, I want us to engage with an alternative mode of contemporary performance poetry rooted in the radical futures proposed by the various street clubs (or gangs) that formed Fred Hampton?s Rainbow Coalition.
Other materials include theoretical readings in poetics and aesthetics, cultural studies, feminist studies, and critical race and ethnic studies.
