Description

An integrated study of general chemistry. Covers a range of topics including the atomic structure of matter; molecules; chemical reactions; acids and bases; gases; and equilibria in the gas and liquid phase. Students are expected to use algebra to solve problems. General Chemistry is articulated in a full-year series. Partial transfer credit is not allowed for the A,B,C series.

Enrollment Requirements

Prerequisites: Previous or concurrent enrollment in MATH 3 or a math placement score of 300 or higher. Enrollment restricted to sophomores, juniors, or seniors. Prerequisite waived for non-UCSC students. Chemistry self-assessment strongly recommended.

If this class is a prerequisite for a Session 2 course you want to take, email summer@ucsc.edu for a permission number anytime after you enroll.
Incoming students - CHEM 1A is no longer part of the general chemistry series. Incoming students can start with CHEM 3A or CHEM 4A in the fall. This summer, you can start with a general education or another major requirement.
Visiting Students - prerequisite review is waived in summer.
