Description
Study of representative works by William Shakespeare. Course topic changes; please see the Class Search for the current topic. Critical approach designations: Canons, Media. Distribution requirements: Poetry, Pre-1750. May be repeated for credit.
Class Notes
This summer, we will read three plays about shipwrecks and new beginnings: Twelfth Night, The Tempest, and Pericles. In each case, Shakespeare is exploring how we make sense of ourselves and each other when we have lost all our moorings (our homes, our families, our positions in society, even our names). To supplement our study of the plays and enrich our discussion about them, we will sample a number of modern productions and adaptations. I also hope that we will be able to go to productions of Twelfth Night and The Tempest at Santa Cruz Shakespeare (pending the availability of funding). Assignments will include two exercises in textual analysis, one short paper, and a take-home final. No knowledge of Shakespeare is necessary. All are welcome.
