This online course frames and supports the service-learning experiences of students engaged in field placements both here in Santa Cruz and in their home communities. Students approach social challenges thematically (e.g., homelessness, environmentalism, domestic violence, etc.) and consider how different disciplines might engage these issues. This online course frames and supports the service-learning experiences of students here in Santa Cruz and in their home communities. Each student will do at least 2 hours of volunteer community service per week. Students are responsible for making sure they can obtain a community service position that they can do safely, either by working remotely, or volunteering for an organization that follows responsible pandemic protocols. Social challenges are approached thematically (e.g., homelessness, environmentalism, food scarcity, etc.) and course readings draw on various disciplines. Students consider how our community partners conceptualize and address social issues and how these conceptions connect, or fail to connect, with academic approaches.
