Description

Students gain proficiency in illustration media, and acquire training in the essential skills needed to create natural-history inspired illustrations. Students create illustrations and paintings by studying organisms in the Norris Center for Natural History collections, as well as those living on and around campus. Some experience in basic drawing and/or natural-history sketching is recommended. Students are billed a materials fee.

Class Notes

Students are required to purchase their own art supplies by the beginning of class: Graphite pencils: 4B, 2B, 4H, HB Erasers: Pink pearl, kneaded (retractable stick eraser if you prefer those) Aquabee Sketchbook 9 x 12: This sketchbook is very versatile and has the best paper for water color, ink, graphite, and colored pencil that I?ve found in a mixed media sketchbook. As we get into watercoloring, you might ?nd you want some sturdier paper for more involved projects. Similarly, if you do a lot of detailed pen-and-ink work you may ?nd you want paper that is smoother. As we move on in the course, you can supplement this book with watercolor sheets like Arches 140 or 300 weight, or smooth bristol, or other paper that is suited to the assignment and media. Pigma micron pen (or Pitt artist pens): in 005, 01, 03, 05 Pentel aqua water brush, Large Small spotter brush, size 3/0 simply Simmons or Princeton or other brand. (little brush for detail work) Watercolors: Get an empty plastic or metal fold-up watercolor palette and get tubes of watercolor. If you already have some kind of watercolor set, great, you can use that and add colors. You can also buy a travel watercolor set that has half pans of color. Basic colors: Ultramarine Blue Cerulean Blue Quinacridone magenta Cadmium Red Burnt Sienna Lemon Yellow Cadmium Yellow Medium Other colors you might want: Sap Green Windsor blue Burnt umber
