Description

Introduction to playscripts, theatrical production, performance art, dance, and digital media created by/representing diasporic Asians in the U.S. and beyond. Course includes close reading, analysis and discussion, games/VR, related theory/history, film/performance presentations, critical writing, and exploration of students' artistic practice. Students explore how dramatic form, genre, and platform can shape/resist stories of the Asian American experience. Additional themes explored may include: colorism, class/education, anti-Blackness, queerness, transracial adoption, ritual, and accent. (Formerly Asian Theater/Dance and Global Impacts.)

Class Notes

Please note that this class has been updated with a new title (previously Asian Theater/Dance and Global Impacts) and description (see new description in the Description section) taking effect this quarter. ATTN Dance Minors: the class will still satisfy an Upper Division Critical Studies requirement for the Dance minor if taken this quarter, though the class will not focus on dance. (The class also satisfies the ER GE and an Upper Division History/Theory/Critical Studies requirement for the Theater Arts major or minor.) Please ask the instructor if you have questions about the course: aginther@ucsc.edu, and ask the Theater Arts academic advisor if you have questions about satisfying a requirement with this class.
