Introduction to the evolution, ecology, behavior, and natural history of birds, using exemplary case histories to illustrate key concepts in evolution, ecology, and behavior.

Prerequisite(s): BIOE 107, BIOE 109, or BIOE 140. Concurrent enrollment in BIOE 112L is required.

Provide proof of prerequisite material. Visiting Students - prerequisites are lifted in summer. Contact summer@ucsc.edu for a permission code to enroll. If you need to take the prerequisite in Session 1, enroll in that course first, then email summer@ucsc.edu for a permission number. From the Instructor: Introducing students to field identification skills and field investigation of bird censusing, foraging behavior, migration, social behavior, and communication. Some labs will start virtually to help students to learn initial bird identification by sight and sound and studying anatomical structure. Many labs will require self-directed exploration time outside to find birds, and we will discuss findings and questions in virtual labs. We'll even have some birding 'competitions' using eBird. Gotta catch 'em all! Students are not required to have their own transportation, but it will be helpful to get to interesting places to find birds.
