From the instructor: "Environmental problems are complex and require scientific expertise, but that alone is not enough to infiltrate and establish public policy that prevents harm to nature and people. This course will expose students to the debates and dilemmas in public policy concerning environmental risks, the perceptions of risk, and the tradeoffs involved in attempting to eliminate those risks. This course will examine current and emerging topics concerning the public sphere: climate change, agriculture and food production, pollution and waste, biodiversity and conservation. We will use the three hour time frame for a variety of learning activities and modalities, guest speakers, breakout discussion groups, and in class working time for group projects."
