Description
Instruction in practice and performance of gamelan music from Java or Sunda. Preparation of several works for public presentation. May be repeated for credit.
Class Notes
This performance class introduces students to the gamelan music of West Java, Indonesia. The gamelan ensemble, made up primarily of gongs, metallophones, and drums, consists of around twenty instruments and requires close cooperation between musicians to perform. Students will learn to play several of the percussion instruments of this ensemble culminating in a public performance by the class of traditional music of West Java.
No prior music experience or familiarity with gamelan is required for participation.
