Santa Cruz County was historically home to many Awaswas Ohlone-speaking tribes. Course traces the persistent multiethnic quality of the region as it became part of the Spanish empire, Mexico, and the United States.
Class Notes
"Learn about the history of Santa Cruz, from Indigenous roots, colonization by Spanish missionaries, the growth of the Villa de Branciforte, industrialization into a beach resort destination, up through its development into a college town. Guest speakers will share stories of their engagement with local history. This highly interactive course will help you to learn about your home town, and invite you to explore the city and natural environment. As an upper division history course, you will get hands on experience in local archives, as you learn to produce your own historical research."
